Auckland Rugby Referees Association (ARRA)

The Auckland Rugby Referees Association (ARRA) is an independent body committed to providing top-quality rugby officials for matches in Auckland, across New Zealand, and on the international stage.

With a proud membership of over 220 dedicated individuals, ARRA supplies officials for more than 3,100 matches annually, covering Senior, Junior, and Secondary School levels.

Our mission is clear: “To be recognised as leaders in referee development and performance” and “New Zealand’s most successful and influential provincial rugby refereeing association.”

OFFICIALS

Since its founding in 1895 under the leadership of F.J. (Curly) Ohlson, ARRA has been integral to Auckland rugby, growing into a key player in the development and management of refereeing talent. Our officials oversee club and secondary school rugby throughout the winter season, delivering excellence on the field.

Over the years, ARRA has proudly produced 13 international referees, including the legendary John Pring, who officiated all four British Lions test matches in 1971. To honour this legacy, the John Pring Shield is awarded annually to Auckland’s top-ranked referee.

Our current representative referees - Angus Mabey, Dion Aho, Sam Adam, Maggie Cogger-Orr, Tim Olliff, Marcus Playle, Oliver Hadfield, Thomas Roach, Todd Petrie, and Ben O’Keeffe—are among the best in the country, officiating at international matches, Ranfurly Shield challenges, and representative games.

Through international exchanges, ARRA referees continue to gain invaluable global experience, further solidifying our reputation as leaders in rugby officiating.

SOCIAL CONNECTIONS

ARRA is more than a professional body—it’s a community. We foster camaraderie and celebrate our members through a variety of social events and activities. These occasions create a strong sense of belonging and reflect the critical role referees play in ensuring rugby thrives at every level.

Through shared experiences both on and off the field, we aim to build an inclusive and supportive environment where referees can grow, connect, and succeed.

TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT

Leadership on and off the field is at the heart of ARRA’s ethos. We provide weekly training and discussion nights for our members, supported by an experienced coaching department dedicated to nurturing referee development.

From junior rugby to premier fixtures, ARRA leads the way with cutting-edge communication technology and tailored support, ensuring our officials excel in their roles.

SPONSORSHIP

Sponsorship is vital to our success, and we are deeply grateful to our Principal Sponsor, Westie Pies, as well as SAS and Barfoot & Thompson, for their invaluable support. Their contributions ensure ARRA—and refereeing across New Zealand—continues to thrive.
